So far we’ve covered vitamin A and vitamin B5, and now we’re on to Vitamin C and its role in skin health and acne. 

Vitamin C for Acne

Vitamin C is important for the skin because it helps to produce collagen. Collagen is the structural protein that makes up the skin along with elastin. Collagen helps our skin remain elastic and youthful. Because vitamin C helps produce proteins for our skin, the nutrient plays a major part in wound healing, scar formation and scar healing. Getting in ample amounts of vitamin C after a skin injury will help reduce the appearance of the damage and the scars, and you can most likely benefit from by using vitamin C for acne.

The other role that vitamin C plays in the skin lies in its antioxidant power. Vitamin C fights infections and free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative damage in the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that steal electrons from everything they come in contact with, which creates instability in the structure on a molecular level. Antioxidants like vitamin C, zinc and vitamin E all help to control these free radicals before they cause oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is a form of inflammation — and inflammation is the cornerstone of nearly every disease, skin diseases included. So eating vitamin C will help smother the flames of oxidative damage and help build healthy skin.

The best source of vitamin C from nature is the camu berry from the Amazon rain forest. It’s sold in powder form and called camu camu. Camu camu contains up to 60 times more vitamin C than oranges. Other sources of vitamin C are bell peppers, dark leafy greens, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kiwi and strawberries. Many herbs such as basil and thyme, cilantro and parsley are also high in vitamin C. Taking camu camu can give you ample amounts of vitamin C. However, a lot of people with acne can have digestive problems, and taking too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea. To bypass this inconvenience, we can take something called liposomal vitamin C. Liposomes are liquid filled bubbles that have the same structure as our cell membranes. Because the structure is so similar, the liposomes easily permeate into our bloodstream and reach our cells. We can get the benefits of high dosages of vitamin C without the gastrointestinal side effects. I like Seeking Health’s Liposomal Vitamin C and LivOn Lab’s Lypo-Spheric™ Vitamin C. These sources of vitamin C also taste better than camu camu so it may be more preferable.

Ultimately we should strive to get our vitamins and minerals from whole food sources as much as possible. This is because whole foods have co-factors and other things in them such as phytochemicals that help facilitate the vitamins and minerals into our body and help them do what we want them to do. However, as you can tell from the liposomal vitamin C, we can actually get more benefit this way as opposed to the non-liposomal forms.You’ll want to take vitamin C if you are around sick people, you’re sick, if you experience a wound, or just as a healthy thing to do in general. People with acne need more of the antioxidant power of vitamin C, which is why I suggest taking it daily for a minimum of 30 days to enhance the immune system. 

A lot of companies like to tout how much vitamin C is in their products because of how beneficial it is for the skin. But because vitamin C is water soluble and a very sensitive molecule, it begins to degrade as soon as it touches liquid. If you buy a liquid product that says it has lots of vitamin C, chances are there isn’t going to be nearly as much of the vitamin when you apply it to your skin. As the product sits in the warehouse, then on the store shelves, and then in your bathroom, so much time has gone by that the vitamin C content has diminished greatly. To bypass this, you can buy a powdered form of vitamin C and mix it with a serum if you really want to use it as a topical product.
